Power Chords and Protests

A lot of 80's to 90's punk music is so against government it's actually kind of funny. Many bands such as NoFX and Bad Religion have multiple songs that blatantly call out the government. Some people, however, listen to these punk bands over the top lyrics and take them far too seriously. I mean, really, when a singer claims that he wants to "conquer the world" he doesn't purely mean that, but some people take what these bands say and go overboard with it. Some claim that government is the devil's incarnate and laugh at the idea of politicians. Fans believed that they could somehow escape the law for as long as they protested it and listened to the music, but not even those who make the music are above the government. Some fans don't realize that what they are a part of is simply a genre of music, not an actual rebellion. Punk music is not meant to be total anti-government, but rather an escape for those who are angry with the system. Punk music is a forum for discussion, not an alliance against all those with authority. Punk music is crazy for a reason, its an over exaggeration of what the artists really believe, they are simply letting out their anger, frustration and angst.

  1. But isn't being a part of something that is decidedly anti-mainstream a sort of rebellion? You are right that punk is a genre; however, within that genre there are factions on the right and left, which then defines one's views on the government.
